Gunshot killed wolf, investigators say

POCATELLO — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have determined that a wolf killed last week near Weston died of a gunshot wound.

Craig Tabor, the agency´s chief law enforcement officer, said a federal agent will be investigating the death.

“He will talk to folks down there and hopefully see what happened,” Tabor said.

Wolves are protected under the Endangered Species Act.

“If someone shot the wolf because they were protecting livestock, that hasn´t been reported,” Tabor said.

Ranchers are allowed to protect stock from wolves that are harassing them, he said, but the law forbids shooting a wolf on sight.
